Eye health, concentration span, and overall mood are directly related to the quality of light. So, what kind of lighting should be preferred in the workplace?

First of all, natural light is always the ideal choice. If possible, the work desk should be positioned close to a window to receive direct daylight. Daylight reduces eye strain and increases focus. However, direct intense sunlight can cause glare and annoying reflections, so it should be controlled with curtains or blinds.

When natural light is insufficient, artificial lighting comes into play. In work environments, white or daylight-colored light (5000–6500 Kelvin) should be preferred. This light tone supports mental alertness and reduces distractions.

The direction and placement of light are just as important as its tone. If a desk lamp is used, the light source should come from the left for right-handed people and from the right for left-handed people. This prevents shadows from forming. Direct light at eye level can cause glare and discomfort; therefore, indirect lighting is preferred.

Additionally, for people working in front of a screen, the brightness of the screen should be balanced with the ambient light. Using a screen in low light can cause eye strain.

In conclusion, proper lighting is not only important for eye health, but also for concentration, motivation, and overall work performance. Creating a natural and balanced lighting environment that does not strain your eyes will increase your productivity.

How should lighting be used in the workplace?
