Laser Eye Surgery (PRK, LASIK, SMILE)
Laser eye surgeries are surgical procedures performed to correct refractive errors (myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism). The shape of the cornea is altered to reduce or eliminate the need for glasses or contact lenses. There are three main methods:

1. PRK
(Photorefractive Keratectomy)
• It is one of the oldest laser methods.
• The epithelial layer on the surface of the cornea is scraped off, then reshaped with a laser.
• The recovery period is long (pain may occur for several days), but it is safe.
2. LASIK
(Laser-Assisted in Situ Keratomileusis)
• It is the most commonly used method.
• A thin flap is lifted from the cornea, the laser is applied to the underlying layer, and then the flap is replaced.
• It heals quickly and is usually painless.
3. SMILE
(Small Incision Lenticule Extraction)
- (Small Incision Lenticule Extraction)
One of the newest technologies. - A thin piece of tissue (lenticule) is created in the cornea using a laser and removed through a small incision.
- Recovery is fast and usually painless.
Each method is selected based on the patient’s eye structure and needs.
Recovery Process
After laser surgery, you should not rub your eyes for the first week. Eye drops should be used regularly, and sunglasses should be worn to protect the eyes from the sun. If possible, activities such as wearing makeup should be avoided for a while.
Each individual’s recovery process may differ, so doctor check-ups are very important.
1. PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy)
Recovery process
• First 3–5 days: The epithelial layer regenerates. During this process, pain and blurred vision may occur.
• First week: The protective contact lens is removed. Vision gradually becomes clearer.
• 1–4 weeks: Vision continues to improve, but it may take weeks to achieve complete clarity.
• Up to 3 months: Mild blurring, light sensitivity may occur.
2. LASIK (Laser-Assisted in Situ Keratomileusis)
Recovery process
• First 24–48 hours: Vision improves rapidly; most patients can return to work the next day.
• First week: Mild dryness and light sensitivity may occur.
• 1 month: Vision stabilizes; patients achieve full clarity.
• 3–6 months: Mild side effects such as dryness resolve.
3. SMILE (Small Incision Lenticule Extraction)
Recovery process
• First 24–48 hours: Vision begins to improve, slight blurring may occur.
• First week: Vision sharpens, patients can quickly return to their daily lives.
• 1–3 months: Vision stabilizes, mild side effects are rarely seen.
